The Shawshank Redemption is not a true story, but is based on a novella by Stephen King. The movie expands on the original source material and changes the fates of key characters. The prison scenes in The Shawshank Redemption were filmed in a real Ohio prison, adding to the believability of the story.

Plot. In early 1947, Portland, Maine banker Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank State Prison to serve two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife and her lover.

Zihuatanejo was notably mentioned in the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, in which the protagonist Andy Dufresne (played by Tim Robbins) escapes from prison to Zihuatanejo. Followed by his friend and fellow prisoner, Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (played by Morgan Freeman) who later joins him.

At Shawshank Prison, prisoner Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman) befriends Andy. Ultimately Andy escapes through a tunnel that took him 19 years to carve out. We discovered The Shawshank Trail, a series of 15 locations in Mansfield and the surrounding area where the movie was filmed.
